In Gratitude: Sept Catch up

A YEAR LONG CHALLENGE: I originally asked seven people who struggle with a common mental health issue such as depression or anxiety, or a sense of ‘lack’ to be in gratitude for the year ahead. Each of them represented a day of the week and began to post me a photo of something they are grateful for this day for a whole year. We started last month. Since my first request for volunteers three more people joined up and we doubled up on Fridays, Saturdays and more recently Sundays. Read original blog

We catch up with some of ten volunteers four months into a year long photo challenge of capturing a photo of something they are grateful for each week.

In August’s catch up the group were additionally challenged with setting their own reminders for their weekly photos so ownership of the challenge becomes theirs. They would receive just one email inviting them to answer some catch up questions.

Lets see how they all got on this month…

SATURDAY’S NORTHERN PHOTOGRAPHER

Question 1: How the challenge going for you? Ok so I’m often late getting this in, not because of anything other than the monumental amount of things i need to do and also I have a lot to think about- coming from a thinker, that’s a lot! I enjoy it when I do it though!

Question 2: If you got a surprise three day paid break to rest and recuperate, what would you do with those three days? Day one; all expenses paid alternative therapy treatments, massage, reiki, the whole shabang! Day2; all expenses paid shopping trip with personal shopper, breakfast lunch and dinner out. Day3; a day of vegging out and watching brilliantly entertaining films.
Question 3: If you could be proud of one accomplishment between now and next year, what would it be? That’s easy- complete my MA.

SATURDAY’S SOUTHERN PHOTOGRAPHER

Question 1: How the challenge going for you? The challenge is going the same for me as it has been – it provides me with a sense of gratitude that I was lacking before.

Question 2: If you got a surprise three day paid break to rest and recuperate, what would you do with those three days? I would spend the first day in bed, and the next two with my friends and my family. And probably stressing too. Because I’m me.

Question 3: If you could be proud of one accomplishment between now and next year, what would it be? Learning to forgive and to love myself.

SUNDAY’S SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE PHOTOGRAPHER

Question 1: How’s the challenge going for you? Good, it’s good to try and think of something to be grateful for, even if you’ve had a shit week. It forces you to find something positive, even if it’s small.

Question 2: If you got a surprise three day paid break to rest and recuperate, what would you do with those three days? Go somewhere relaxing, in nature, to just be.

Question 3: If you could be proud of one accomplishment between now and next year, what would it be? Being happy.

SUNDAY’S NORTHERN HEMISPHERE PHOTOGRAPHER

Question 1: How’s the challenge going for you? I have been struggling to make a real effort. I have been staring at my camera bag and allowing any obstacle (real or made up) to put me off grabbing my gear and going out there. Tonight I remembered that I have been taught how to use my camera properly and get the best out of what there is to work with. Anyway, I grabbed my camera and a couple of lenses, hopped a few farm hedges and just sat in a field and waited for the right moment. I would a like a bit of cloud, but like I said, I made the most of what was there. In the end I came away quite pleased with the shots I managed to get; I will endeavour to post more photos with some thought behind the composition.

Question 2: If you got a surprise three day paid break to rest and recuperate, what would you do with those three days? I would go away in my caravan with my border collie “Jack”. We would go to Exmoor and do lots of walking, sitting in the middle of the moor and engaging with nature, and of course I’ll take my camera with me.

Question 3: If you could be proud of one accomplishment between now and next year, what would it be? I would be very proud if by this time next year, I was recognised by family and close friends for being calmer, easier to comprehend when I talk and just generally slowing my life down . It would be nice to think that I have made the right changes, so that they no longer feel that I am “about ready to go off the rails”. If I can do that, then just maybe I can achieve the answer to question 2, and that would really be something

MONDAY’S PHOTOGRAPHER

Question 1: How’s the challenge going for you?  Good- the last couple of weeks have been hard as I have been busy moving, and feeling quite stressed with it!
Question 2:   If you got a surprise three day paid break to rest and recuperate, what would you do with those three days? Yes please!!  Sleep, walk, swim in the sea. Enjoy some quiet…
Question 3:   If you could be proud of one accomplishment between now and next year, what would it be? Finishing my next lot of training and finally earning some money!

TUESDAY’S PHOTOGRAPHER

Question 1: How’s the challenge going for you? I enjoy it; it’s nice looking for things to appreciate. I think since the reminders for the photos challenge stopped last month I have had to be more active and have written my own reminders in my diary.

Question 2: If you got a surprise three day paid break to rest and recuperate, what would you do with those three days? Tidy up, and enjoy time on my own, balanced by time with my family.

Question 3: If you could be proud of one accomplishment between now and next year, what would it be? The self reflective inner work I have committed to do is now helping me and is enabling me to help my daughter.

WEDNESDAY’S PHOTOGRAPHER

Question 1: How’s the challenge going for you? I was finding the challenge a real joy but recently I have hit a difficult patch and was finding it hard to find my gratitude. All that I had felt grateful for in the past few months couldn’t penetrate the scrambled egg in my head.

Question 2: If you got a surprise three day paid break to rest and recuperate, what would you do with those three days? I would be off to a Buddist retreat and in a beautiful setting, switch off my phone and recentre.

Question 3: If you could be proud of one accomplishment between now and next year, what would it be? To feel good enough

What are you grateful for today?
